Healing Foods: Wheat Grass Juice & Broccoli Sprout Juices


There is little doubt that what we eat shapes and strongly influences our ability to fight off disease, maintain high energy levels and stamina, and has profound effects on our mood and emotional well being. There is even strong evidence that what our mothers ate when they were pregnant and before (our fathers too), contributes massively to the overall health and well being of the child going forward.

It’s a mystery to us why the medical industry focuses so much time, effort and money on drug inventions and drug dispensing, and so little on the fuel (foods) that power and enable the various mechanisms of the body to function correctly. Yes, we are living longer lives on average, but the quality of life for those in their so-called “golden years” can be horrifying, with pain, fatigue, and mental decline being near constant companions. Many folks are totally dependent on prescription drugs and constant visits to the doctor. Although this is a profoundly sad situation, it is not universal, and we should draw hope and inspiration from the fact that there are many communities across the world where people live active and vital, pain free lives well into their 90’s and beyond. Dr. Charles Northern, in a report to the United States Senate, 74th Congress, 2nd Session, in 1936 said: “The truth is that our foods vary enormously in value, and some of them aren’t worth eating, as food. For example, vegetation grown in one part of the country may assay 1100 parts per billion of iodine, as against 20 in that grown elsewhere. Processed milk has run anywhere from 362 parts per million of iodine and 127 of iron, down to nothing [elsewhere]”.

Unfortunately, things have only gotten worse in the 70+ years that have followed: The 1992 Earth Summit Report documents declining mineral values in farm and range soils over the past 100 years: North America 85%, South America 76%, Europe 72%, Asia 76%, Africa 74%, Australia 55%. North America is leading the pack for the worst mineral depletion!

This is great advice - if only there were a full complement of minerals remaining in the soil from which the fruits and vegetables are grown. The modern industrial food chain is replacing back to the soil only what is absolutely essential to produce “good looking” produce that uninformed and unsuspecting consumers will buy. Many nutrient deficiencies can remain hidden with early harvest and speed to market. This situation is absolutely shameful. Very few of us in our modern world have the time to investigate such things properly, and anyone going to the supermarket to purchase nourishment for themselves or their family should not be “duped” this way.


A huge vitamin and mineral supplement industry has sprung up to service this dangerous situation, but unfortunately, many supplements are useless because our bodies cannot properly absorb the minerals and vitamins in the form presented (non-organic minerals versus organic minerals) and in the ratios and amounts presented. It is easy to cause imbalance or deficiency in other mineral levels if one takes too much of a particular mineral.

Broccoli sprout juice (sprouts have many times the nutrient value of the adult plant) is yet another simply amazing healing agent. Research conducted at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, strongly suggested that a compound found in abundance in Broccoli sprouts may be a superior cancer preventative, and may reduce the rate of growth of established cancer tumors. Sulforophane Glucosinolate (SGS) is the name of the compound identified. (Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA Vol 94, pp10367-10372 September 1997). Much more research on broccoli sprout juice has followed.
